WINNIPEG – Winnipeg police are issuing a warning to residents after a receiving a number of city-wide reports of cars being broken into.
Officers said the most common item being stolen is garage door remotes which the thieves use to gain access to people’s garages and then homes.
Police recommend people keep their car visible and avoid parking by fences or trees or large cars because thieves like to work in private.
Other tips to consider include always remembering to activate your car alarm, keep windows and sunroofs closed and being mindful of leaving valuable in your car and within plain sight.
In May, there was a surge of vehicle break-ins in the River Heights area. Afterwards, 35 officers and cadets went door-to-door handing out information to residents and giving advice on how to prevent property crime.
