CALGARY – The City of Calgary’s annual fall leaf and pumpkin composting program is underway.

Calgarians can bring their bagged leaves and pumpkins to any of the city’s 33 drop-off locations free of charge until Nov. 8.

City officials say not many residents are aware of the paper yard waste bags they recommends using.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“We prefer the use of paper yard waste bags over plastic bags for the Leaf and Pumpkin program,” said Waste & Recycling Services Superintendent Darcy Cairns in a news release. “Paper bags are more environmentally-friendly as they are 100% compostable and leave no waste behind. We would love to see Calgarians make the switch.”

Quick tips for participating in the City of Calgary’s Leaf & Pumpkin composting program:

  • Paper yard waste bags are preferred! You can usually find them in the same aisle as garbage bags at most grocery, hardware and garden retailers.
  • Only leaves and pumpkins are accepted. Please do not include rocks, branches, soil or sod.
  • This program is intended for residential use only.

Officials say the program helps Calgarians divert over 2 million kilograms of leaves and pumpkins from City landfills every fall.
