TORONTO – Siri Agrell, a one-time journalist and Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne’s former deputy director of communications, will be taking on a new role for Mayor John Tory starting Monday.

Agrell will assist in the development of strategy and long term communications planning with the mayor as director of strategic initiatives, according to an internal release.

In the 2014 municipal election, she played the crucial role of senior communications advisor to David Soknacki’s campaign.

Soknacki says Agrell brings a wealth of experience and wisdom to the role.

“I know she has a sense of direction and I know she has steel in her backbone … A number of times she had ideas and they came with expectations and came with targets and objectives,” Soknacki said.

“I stepped down and realized I needed to do so for all sorts of reasons and the fact that she is now contributing to the political process , I think is both good for her and both good for city hall.”

Agrell began her career as a journalist for the Globe and Mail as an urban affairs reporter and most recently worked as vice president of communications strategy agency Pilot PMR.

“More than anything, she will help the Mayor achieve his vision of a more liveable, affordable and well-managed city,” an internal release read.

“Her contributions will support and enhance the talented and dedicated team we already have in place.”

Agrell tweeted out Friday she was joining Tory’s team and said she was honoured to work with the mayor.
