Purported paving scam strikes Regina non-profit

REGINA – A roving asphalt scam is reportedly making the rounds south of the border and it seems to be popping up again in Saskatchewan.

A couple of years ago police warned about a group of workers offering a paving service for cheap. They would do half the work, ask for money, but then never return.

A local non-profit group was skeptical when it was told a similar tale on Tuesday morning.

“He said that they were a paving company and they were working on the stadium. They had extra material and they didn’t want to take it back to Edmonton, and would we be interested?,” said Carol Gay Bell, the artistic director of Saskatchewan Express.

“The gentleman was very nice and very accommodating. The only thing that he said was that he would need the cheque today.”

The RCMP said it has heard similar reports in Saskatchewan, but are looking for more information.

When Global News called the number for the company, the man who answered gave me the same spiel and cheap price. However, only a few minutes later, he called the newsroom back claiming the company had run out of material and was leaving the city immediately.
