Deadly car crash in Surrey

 METRO VANCOUVER — A 42-year-old man is dead and a woman injured after a collision in Surrey near 96th avenue and 128 street on Thursday evening, according to Surrey RCMP.

At 6:27 p.m., a 2005 Kia sedan was turning left onto 128 Street when a 1996 Ford Econoline van reportedly collided with the passenger side of the car.

The 23-year-old female driver of the Kia was taken to hospital with critical injuries, police said. Her passenger, whose name will not be released until next of kin have been notified, died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The 36-year-old male driver of the van was not injured, RCMP Sgt. Phil Hasenpflug said.

Neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be factors in the crash, police said.

The crash caused traffic closures in the area that were expected to reopen in the early morning hours on Friday.

The Surrey Criminal Collision Investigation Team continues to investigate the collision.
