DDO seniors home appeals no camera court decision

MONTREAL — A Dollard-des-Ormeaux seniors home is appealing a judge’s decision to not allow cameras in patients’ rooms.

A patient’s son asked the home whether he could put a camera in his mother’s room to check on her.

Administrators at the CHSLD Vigi Santé on Thornhill Street in DDO agreed and informed employees that the camera had been placed in the patient’s room.

Staff filed a complaint saying the camera violated their privacy rights.

On Aug. 3, a Quebec Superior Court judge sided with employees.

The senior at the heart of the case suffers from Parkinson’s disease.

Patients’ rights advocates said in certain cases, the rights of the patients should trump the privacy concerns of the employees.

“I think the workers in this case are wrong,” advocate Pierre Blais told Global News.

“We are not there to spy on them. We are there to make sure that a vulnerable person has the correct services.”

The appeal process launched by the longterm care facility begins next month.
