Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain travel 140 million miles to Mars in their Ridley Scott epic, “The Martian”, but we wanted to find out if either of them would actually go to space if given the opportunity. ET Canada’s Cheryl Hickey asked if the stars of the film are game for a little space trip.
“I think so down the line. I’m not one of these guys who wants to go colonize mars in the first wave of people,” he revealed. “I think we have to get off the planet so we can protect the species from one extinction level event.”
As for Chastain? Not a chance. “If you and I were like ‘Let’s go to mars right now’ we’re dead!” she laughed. “We have no training! We are not prepared!” And then there’s just one more little issue. “I would have to bring my dog and we haven’t figured out a space suit for a three-legged mutt.”
In the film, in theatres on October 2, Matt plays Mark Watney, an astronaut who gets left behind on Mars alone. The actor spent five weeks shooting all by himself with no other actors on set. In reality, he says he’ll take the alone time with he can get it. “I love being with my kids but you can attest to the fact that you would take a day alone now or then if you could get it,” he joked. “I wouldn’t want to be alone for more than a day or two..I think a day would be good. You kind of re-set , re-charge.” Damon wears the spacesuit well, but Cheryl wanted to know who he thinks is the biggest space stud in a battle with his A-list best buds: George Clooney in “Gravity”, Ben Affleck in “Armageddon”, or himself in “The Martian”?
“Ben is very…that’s very GQ!” he laughed. “Definitely not George. George is the bronze medalist in that group.” Sorry George! When he turns the table on Cheryl, her pick is a no-brainer. “You of course,” she said. “Because I’m here!” he teased.
