Calgary condo resident warns others after home robbed twice, car stolen

WATCH ABOVE: With every condo that is going up in Calgary’s downtown the number of people calling the core home also rises, but as Bindu Suri reports, that is also leading to the opportunity for crime.

CALGARY – A Calgary man is warning others to be extra vigilant after he says his East Village condo unit was broken into twice, and his car was stolen.

Last month, Steve Blake returned from vacation to find someone had forced open his door at Riverfront Pointe condominiums. He hadn’t finished fixing the door, when a week later another intruder went in. This time the suspect grabbed his keys while he was sleeping.

“I was awoken by the police saying, ‘can we come in? We want to check your premises,” said Blake.

Meanwhile, the suspect took off in Blake’s car. He was in the process of moving and had his car full of belongings, some of which are sentimental and priceless.

“Pictures…my dad’s wedding ring. He has since passed away now.”

Two other condo units in the building were also broken into that same night. Neither had been locked.

Calgary police track crime rates in all areas of the city and said Blake’s case is simply a crime of opportunity. Police said adding to the issue is that more people are moving into new condos downtown.

“That area in particular is facing significant transition,” said acting inspector Tom Hanson.

“They are facing crimes related to residential properties, but no higher rates than any other area of the city.”

There is currently no on-site security at the Riverfront Pointe condominiums between 2 a.m. and 9 a.m.

Since the break-ins, several notices from the condo board have been posted informing residents of extra security measures in place. A warning to be extra vigilant was also issued.

Blake’s green-coloured Lexus is still missing, and police are investigating the matter.
