EDMONTON – Parents whose children attend Mount Pleasant School on the south side are expressing concern about increased traffic chaos in the area.
The community has seen a traffic reconfiguration project start on 106 Street between 53 and 56 Avenues.
Traffic can no longer travel south on 106 Street, forcing vehicles onto small residential roads.
“Now you’ve opened a whole other can of worms,” said Lynn Durbacz who has lived in the area for most of her life.
“A car U-turned in front of the school on 106 Street, then another in front of the cemetery.”
The change is a two-year project that was requested by a number of residents in the area, but it has also prompted a flood of complaints to the city.
“Not everybody wants to turn around that way, and then you have the local traffic that way that is being affected by more traffic going through the side streets,” said Jennifer Cheng.
Cheng admitted she is concerned drivers and parents will become frustrated when they try to leave the neighbourhood.
“It is challenging to have to turn around somehow, or park in a different direction,” she added.
On the first day of class, a number of drivers honked their horns, parked illegally and made U-turns on 106 Street as children were crossing trying to get to class.
“We encourage parents to follow all traffic rules,” pleaded Principal Dr. Elisabeth Thomsen, “slow down in school zones, not make any U-turns around the school, and to drive really safely and watch out for little children who may dart in front of vehicles.”
