CALGARY – Thousands of students headed back to class for a new school year on Tuesday.
The Calgary Board of Education said on their website they expect their student population to reach nearly 117,000 for the 2015-16 school year.
“We are excited to welcome both new and returning faces to the CBE this fall,” said David Stevenson, chief superintendent of schools.
Meanwhile, the Calgary Catholic School District will have more than 52,000 students in 105 local schools.
“We look forward to the new school year and the opportunities to live and learn in our Catholic faith,” said Chief Superintendent of the Calgary Catholic School District Gary Strother on the district’s website.

School Zones / Playground Zones in effect
Calgary police are reminding drivers to slow down and be on the lookout for children as they pass by schools.
The City of Calgary is in the process of converting all of the city’s school zones into playground zones, which reduces the speed limit to 30 km/h from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., 365 days a year.
“It’s important that people driving through a playground zone are going 30 km/h when they hit that sign,” said Cst. Dave Den Tandt.
