Feline deaths prompt warning to keep Calgary cats indoors

WATCH ABOVE: The Calgary Humane Society is warning pet owners to keep their cats indoors after reports of several incidents where animals have reportedly been mutilated or killed. Global’s Carolyn Kury De Castillo reports.

CALGARY – The Calgary Humane Society is warning Calgarians to keep their cats indoors following several incidents where felines were found mutilated, severely injured or dead.

The organization says their protections officers have investigated the death of 12 outdoor cats this year alone.

“Sadly, all these cases could have been prevented,” said the Calgary Humane Society in a news release on Monday.

“While some cat owners will argue depriving a cat of outdoor freedom decreases its’ quality of life, the reality is quite the opposite.”

Senior Manager of Animal Cruelty Investigations Brad Nichols says outdoor cats are prime targets for cruelty.

“Beyond these risks, depriving a cat of adequate food, water or shelter is an offense under the Animal Protection Act.”
