EDMONTON — The parents of Nadine Skow are speaking out about the tragic and sudden loss of their only daughter.
The 38-year-old was found dead in her apartment Tuesday morning. Her former boyfriend is now charged with second-degree murder and indignity to a human body.
Harvey and Helen Skow said Nadine loved her job working with youth, enjoyed travelling and jokes, adored her baby niece, and loved her parents.
“She was born to help people. She was always there for people that needed her help,” said Helen.
Nadine called her parents every day – sometimes several times a day – and when they didn’t hear from her earlier this week, they knew something was wrong.
“By Tuesday morning I said to Harvey, ‘there is something wrong.’ So he said, ‘I’ll phone her work at 8:30.’ I went to work. When he phoned her work, they said they’d go check on her.”

Nadine’s father called her coworkers and asked them to check up on her. They were first to discover what had happened to Nadine in her apartment.

Neighbours heard her screams, but nobody called police. That fact is shocking to Nadine’s mom and dad, who said their daughter could have still been alive today if someone had dialled 911.
“I try not to but yeah, there is anger, not only at him but all the people that didn’t call the police,” said Helen. “I’m just as angry at them. Just as angry at them. In this world, you have to step in.”
“Dialling 911 does not put you in the middle of anything.”
Nadine was supposed to move to her new condo this past Wednesday.
“She was packed up, ready to move,” said Helen. “She had picked out her swatches for paint.”

“I understand it’s kind of a tough neighbourhood, but the neighbourhood had nothing to do with what happened with Nadine.”
The service for Nadine Skow is being held Monday afternoon at South Side Memorial. Her parents are asking that donations be made to the Edmonton Police Victim Services Unit in lieu of flowers.
