Rally calls for access to education for all children, regardless of status

MONTREAL – Going to school is not a privilege shared by all Quebec students.

In fact, hundreds of undocumented children are forced to stay home because of their family’s immigration status.

Supporters of these families rallied Wednesday in front of the Marguerite-Bourgeoys School Board.

They are demanding free public schooling for all children – regardless of status.

For years, Education Across Borders Collective and Solidarity Across Borders have called upon the provincial government to drop school fees.

Now, it seems they’re finally being heard.

“When is that legislative change going to happen? It is going to happen soon that kids can go to school,” said François Blais, a spokesperson for the Education Minister.

He added the ministry is working on legislative changes to guarantee free public education for all children.
