Highway 63 reopened after fiery two-vehicle collision

EDMONTON — A serious crash on Highway 63, approximately 25 kilometres north of Boyle, shut down the highway for more than four hours Wednesday.

At 10:30 a.m., a semi tractor trailer unit heading north and a pickup truck heading south collided. The semi burst into flames.

The driver of the pickup truck was pulled from the vehicle and taken to hospital by STARS air ambulance with serious injuries, in stable condition. He was the only person in the vehicle.

RCMP said the driver of the semi was able to escape uninjured before the tractor was engulfed in flames.

The semi was empty at the time of the crash.

Highway 63 was closed in both directions at Township Road 670.5 for four-and-a-half hours.  Traffic was detoured around the collision site while crews worked to put out the fire and remove the wreckage.

The highway was reopened at approximately 2:30 p.m.

Investigators are trying to determine what lead to the crash but alcohol has been ruled out as a factor.

RCMP say charges against the driver of the pickup truck are being considered.

Boyle is about 145 kilometres north of Edmonton.
