Russian cosmonauts conduct spacewalk

Two Russian cosmonauts will endure a six-and-a-half hour spacewalk Monday. File/NASA

TORONTO – Two Russian cosmonauts will be venturing out of the International Space Station for a lengthy spacewalk Monday morning.

Space station commander Gennady Padalka and Mikhail Kornienko of the Russian Federal Space Agency are installing new equipment on the Russian segment of the station. The pair are also conducting a detailed photographic inspection of the station.

Specifically, they will install gap spanners that will help future spacewalkers. They will also install fasteners on communications antennas and replace one antenna. There’s also a bit of housecleaning as they clean the windows of the Russian Zvezda Service Module.

The spacewalk is expected to last approximately six-and-a-half hours and is the 188th in space station history.
