TORONTO — Residents in the city’s Fort York neighborhood are saying the area has seen an increasing amount of traffic congestion in recent months.
With condos at nearly every street corner, Fort York resident Jill says it’s a nightmare trying to get around.
“Between the rush hour times you can’t get anywhere,” Jill said.
“In the mornings and at night between 3 p.m. 5 p.m. I don’t go anywhere, because I can’t.”
Increased traffic around Billy Bishop airport has resident Klara concerned when crossing the streets.
“Since the airport came in the traffic has been just terrible,” she said.
Councillor Joe Cressy says the city has been in consultation with traffic experts to help both cars and pedestrians to move safely.
“We initiate what we called Bathurst-quay neighbourhood plan,” Cressy said.
“This was a study working with transportation staff and the community to propose changes to signal timing, to turning restrictions, looking at significant details around Fleet St. and that Bathurst-Lakeshore intersection.”

Lynda MacDonald, Manager of West Section Community Planning, says the city planners have been in consultation with residents.
Cressy says studies to improve pedestrian-traffic flow are currently underway but residents have yet to see any changes.
“In the last month, it’s gotten a lot worse,” said Jill.
Recommendations will be brought to Toronto and East York community council in the fall.
