UPDATE: University Bridge reopens to traffic 4 weeks early

SASKATOON – There’s good news for motorists who usually use University Bridge in Saskatoon. It’s expected to reopen early after being closed at the beginning of May for rehabilitation work.

The work was originally slated to be completed at the end of August but now city officials say it could be open within a week or two.

“Currently the concrete on the north side of the bridge is curing,” says Rob Frank, the manager of asset preservation for the city.

“The contractor still needs to complete some grinding and smoothing work, approach paving, crack filling, expansion joint gland installation, pedestrian hand rail installations and site cleanup – as soon this work is competed we can open the bridge.”

Frank credits the dry conditions for the rehabilitation work being completed ahead of schedule.

“This is one of the direst years on record so the weather definitely helped a ton this year,” said Frank.

Even once it reopens, there will still be some minor work to complete including sealing the deck surface and painting lane lines, which will require some lane restrictions during off-peak hours.
