Hungry Box encourages Montrealers to ‘sandwich it forward’

MONTREAL – Born out of the belief that in a world of such abundant wealth no one should go hungry, Sean Scourse founded the Hungry Box.

For every box purchased, the exact same meal is donated to the hungry and the homeless in Montreal.

The idea first started as an experiment – a unique way to tie Scourse’s love of cooking with a socially conscious concept – and it has boomed into a full fledge business and restaurant.

The latest health and medical news emailed to you every Sunday.

“Whether it’s 40 below or hot, we’ll find them and feed them on your behalf,” said Scourse, who distributes the boxes to those in need within 24 hours of purchase.

Hungry Box is located in NDG and has an outlet on McGill College in downtown Montreal.

The organization has already partnered-up with several schools.

Now, it’s looking to expand.

“We would love to drop-off sandwiches at cafés and other businesses that would help us leverage what we’re doing,” said Scourses.

Since it launched in February of last year, the Hungry Box has delivered 16,898 meals.

Scourses said the desire to help others and his passion for food became stronger than hunger itself, which he hopes will lead to both fuller stomachs and a prosperous business.
