The first Humboldt penguin to be born at the Calgary Zoo is thriving.

According to zoo officials, his parents Reina and Javier are caring for him in his new habitat.

“This hatch is a significant boost for our captive Humboldt population,” says Dr. Malu Celli, Curator, Calgary Zoo. “When these kinds of births occur it assures us we are getting one step closer to helping save important species.”

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Humboldt penguins are considered susceptible to extinction. Humboldt penguins are one of the animals in the zoo’s Species Survival Plan, which is put in place to safeguard them from becoming extinct.
