Calgary Zoo announces new animal welfare committee

CALGARY – The Calgary Zoo has announced the creation of a new committee aimed at strengthening its animal welfare protocols.

The Calgary Zoo Welfare, Ethics and Research Committee will consist of the existing Animal Welfare Committee and Biological Research Review Committee along with outside experts.

Officials say the move creates a single consistent structure to review ideas and concerns from staff, volunteers and the public.

“We recognize the science of animal welfare is continually changing so we must always be adapting,” said Calgary Zoo President and CEO Dr. Clément Lanthier. “We aren’t content to simply meet existing standards; our goal is to constantly raise the bar.

In the last year, the zoo has spent more than $2.5 million on animal care facility improvements.
