Calgary man charged after stolen vehicle pursuit in Saskatoon

SASKATOON – Saskatoon police pursued a stolen vehicle Saturday which led to the arrest of a robbery suspect. At around 12:45 a.m., officers spotted a vehicle being driven in an erratic manner at Idylwyld Drive and 22nd Street.

An attempt was made to stop the vehicle but it fled.

Police say the vehicle matched the description of one believed to have been used in a Saskatoon robbery and had also been stolen from Regina earlier this week.

The police air support unit took command of the pursuit. The plane maintained visual contact with the suspect vehicle and relayed its location to ground members.

The suspect eventually abandoned the vehicle near McKercher Drive and 8th Street and attempted to flee on foot.

A 34-year-old Calgary man was taken into custody after a struggle with officers and a police dog. No injuries were reported.

The man is facing charges related to a theft from a business in the 2800-block of Wanuskewin Drive on July 22 and a robbery of an 8th Street business on July 23.

Charges include robbery, theft under $5,000, possession of stolen property over $5,000, evading police and dangerous driving. He is scheduled to appear in provincial court Monday morning.

The suspect is also believed to responsible for several incidents in Regina. Investigators are working with Regina police and say additional charges are likely to be laid.
