CALGARY – Hundreds of passengers aboard Calgary CTrains had to wait through a slow commute on Friday for a second day in a row.

Calgary Transit said the entire 202/Blue Line experienced delays starting around 7 a.m. due to a mechanical issue.

“We had to remove a CTrain from service because it was having issues with the pantograph (the piece of equipment on the CTrain that makes contact with the power lines and powers the CTrain),” a statement on their website reads.

Due to the issue, trains were forced to use a single track between Bridgeland and City Hall stations, causing travel times in that area to double.

The issue was later resolved around 8:45 a.m.

On Thursday, CTrain service in the downtown core was stopped for several hours after a power outage caused by damage to overhead electrical lines near City Hall.

Speaking to Global News on Thursday, Acting Director of Calgary Transit Russell Davies said the issue was caused by a pantograph which had been damaged after hitting an object.

“We unfortunately had an issue where one of our [Ctrain cars] hit an object and fractured the pantograph on the train – which, as it travelled through the system, eventually got a little tangled downtown at City Hall.”
