CALGARY – Residents in another Calgary neighbourhood are claiming their community mailbox was left open for hours Thursday night, after Global News first reported a similar incident on Wednesday in the city’s southeast.

Ashley Hartman said a mailbox on Hawkmount Close N.W. was wide open when she arrived home at around 6 p.m. Thursday with keys and parcels in full view.

“I know it was at least open for a couple hours after that, because we checked after and it was still open,” said Hartman.

Another resident in the community told Global News she saw the postal worker leave the doors open around 4:30 p.m.

“I wasn’t too concerned about my mail,” said Hartman.

“But if it’d been last week, my son had a birthday and he’s been getting presents in the mail. Next week I’m expecting a replacement credit card, so all that could’ve been out in the open.”

Hartman said she tried using the Canada Post website to file a complaint but said it wouldn’t load. She said she called a customer service number, but when she selected the option for mailbox issues, “it just said goodbye and hung up on me.”

Canada Post did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Global News.

On Wednesday, several residents contacted Global News, complaining their community mailbox on 30 Avenue S.E. had been open for several hours.

“My neighbour sat out there and just guarded it…in 30 degree heat,” Brenda Miller told Global News Thursday. “You could see people’s cheques!”

In reply to Wednesday’s incident, a Canada Post spokesperson said an investigation was underway.

“Unfortunately, there was a breakdown in communicating the issue properly, which contributed to the delay,” said spokesperson Anick Losier in an email Thursday. “We have reviewed our processes and taken steps to rectify any future mishap. We thank the customer who diligently alerted us to the issue and apologize for this unacceptable situation.”
