Kickstarter campaign aims to fund Chumbawamba documentary

'I Get Knocked Down' is the title of a proposed documentary about '90s band Chumbawamba.

TORONTO — Dunstan Bruce of Chumbawamba is hoping fans will finance a documentary about the ’90s band.

The singer launched a Kickstarter campaign for I Get Knocked Down (The Untold Story of Chumbawamba) in hopes of raising about $79,000. With 24 days to go in the campaign, he’s collected about $29,000.

In a video on Kickstarter, Bruce insists there’s more to the British band than its 1997 smash “Tubthumping.”

He explains: “For you, that was probably just a one-hit wonder that you vaguely remember dancing to back in the ’90s but for me that was a very small tip of a very large iceberg.”

Bruce says he’s passionate about the project.

“I don’t want this story to get lost,” he says. “I’m determined not to lose this story and I’m determined to make this film.”

Chumbawamba’s Jude Abbott, who joined in 1996, said Monday she believes there is a market for a documentary about the group.

“It’s about the crazy world of celebrity and pop music and the music industry,” she told The Roz & Mocha Show on Toronto’s Kiss 92.5. “Because the hit was so big in America and Canada, a lot of people based in the UK aren’t aware of the extent to which it was so huge over there. It’s a story that reaches beyond the specifics of what it’s about.”

Abbott said the timing is right for a look back at Chumbawamba.

“I suppose enough time has elapsed since the hit. We’ve got a bit of distance from it, a bit of perspective,” she said.

“The band itself ceased to exist formally in November 2012 so it’s all very firmly in our pasts now.”
