Oilers sign first overall pick Connor McDavid to three-year entry-level contract

WATCH: Hockey fans have seen Connor McDavid on TV and they’ve experienced the hype. But, as John Sexsmith reports, most Oilers fans have never seen the phenom in person… until today.

EDMONTON – The Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms with centre Connor McDavid on a three-year entry-level contract.

“It’s very special,” said McDavid. “It’s been a crazy couple of weeks and I’m very honoured to be able to do that.”

He said the shine isn’t wearing off yet.

“When would you ever get tired of signing your first NHL deal? I mean, that’s something that you dream of so I’m just trying to enjoy myself.”

The 18-year-old phenom spent the last three seasons with the OHL’s Erie Otters.

He was selected by the Oilers with the first overall pick in last month’s NHL Entry Draft.

McDavid has some goals of his own to accomplish before reporting back.

“Just getting bigger, stronger, faster – I think that’s so important. To play at the next level you have to be all those things so it’s something I’m going to work on.”

“I’ve been involved in a couple meetings with the team and video sessions and I’m just trying to soak it all in.”

McDavid, from Newmarket, Ont., had 120 points (44 goals, 76 assists) in 47 games with Erie last season.

The six-foot-one 190-pounder was named Canadian Hockey League player of the year.

He also helped Canada win gold at the 2015 world junior hockey championship.
