“I got woke by this phone call and it’s the best way to get woke up,” said Stewart. “It gives us a little bit of closure… but it does bring us to the next stage where I want to know why…. like what she could have done that was so bad to deserve this.”

“We need somebody to say sorry,” added Stewart. “We need somebody to say why they did this… to know how it ever got to this point.”

“She was such an easygoing person… I still can’t wrap my head around why somebody would do this.”

Stewart says she has mixed emotions upon finding out that Rubletz, who is the father of Newman’s two-year-old son, was the one arrested.

“It would have been so much easier for me if it was somebody random,” said Stewart. “[Jessica] totally trusted him. She was very trusting.”

He will next appear in court on Monday, June 29, 2015.

Global News had learned on Wednesday that Rubletz was considered a person of interest in the case.
