McCrimmon replaces D.J. Smith who was hired by the Toronto Maple Leafs to be an assistant to Mike Babcock. McCrimmon had recently been appointed to the role of head coach of Canada’s national summer under-18 team, but after taking on the new role, Stan Butler will now take over those duties.

All three of Canada’s national men’s programs will be held at the same time this summer as part of the inaugural National Teams’ Summer Showcase.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for these groups to learn from and inspire each other as they all come together in Calgary,” Hockey Canada’s vice-president of hockey operations and national teams Scott Salmond said through a media release.

“We are looking forward to hosting the 194 players as they work towards representing Canada in international competition,” Salmond said.

The showcase runs from July 29 to August 6 at the Markin MacPhail Centre at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary.
