Canmore couple could be homeless by August; baby with heart defect on the way

WATCH: One Canmore couple is desperately searching for somewhere to live, but as Jayme Doll reports, that’s just a small part of their problem.

CANMORE, Alta. – Elation turned to heartbreak when a Canmore couple learned their unborn daughter has a heart defect.

“I was really sad,” said Melissa Lariviere, a mother of three boys. "It's really hard to hear after being the first daughter in my family."

Lariviere is due any day and staying alone in Edmonton, close to the doctors who will have to perform heart surgery on the baby when she’s born.

“The hardest part right now would probably be–not being able to do too much because I’m up here. And then I see my kids on Skype and it just breaks my heart that I can’t be there with them.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Last week Lariviere’s partner, Cory Wilson, was dealt another big blow back in Canmore.

“We found out we could be homeless by August,” said Wilson. “That was pretty tough.”

The house they rent is being sold, and finding another place for a family of six in Canmore is no easy task–especially as they try to pay rent in Edmonton as well.

The mayor of Canmore admits the affordable housing situation is a crisis the town is desperately trying to solve.

“The availability of rental housing has been at zero for a long time,” said Mayor John Borrowman. “The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation listed us as having one of the worst vacancy rates in the country.”

Wilson is a manager at Tim Hortons and says his position is not transferable. The couple loves the community and doesn’t want to uproot the family if they don’t have to.

“That’s probably the biggest fear…putting a roof over their head,” said Wilson. “I’ve always prided myself on being there for my family, and there may be a point I won’t be able to, no matter what I do.”

Back in Edmonton, Lariviere is just trying to stay positive, focusing on bringing her baby girl into the world.

“[I hope] that all the operations will go well and she won’t need anything afterwards.”

A GoFundMe campaign has be set up for the baby, who they plan to name Awtumn Wilson.
