SASKATOON – Drivers heading in and out of Saskatoon on Highway 16 will be facing detours starting next month. A major rehabilitation project is slated to start on the overpass in the northwest part of the city in early July.

Work on the $2.7-million project includes upgrades to barriers and guardrails, internal structural repairs and concrete replacement. Crews will also remove and repave the surface of the bridge which handles about 7,800 vehicles a day.

“This project will ensure the overpass is sound for years to come as traffic in Saskatoon continues to grow,” said Nancy Heppner, the minister of highways and infrastructure.

“This extensive rehabilitation project is going to preserve this important piece of infrastructure for years to come and benefit thousands of commuters and visitors to the Saskatoon region,” added Saskatoon Mayor Don Atchison.

Detours will be in place for the duration of the work, which will include crossovers to accommodate two-way traffic on both sides of the overpass. Work on the crossovers will take place during the week of June 22.
