We met the 14 new houseguests on the upcoming season of Big Brother this morning, but there’s a lot we still have yet to learn about them — especially 25-year-old digital media consultant Audrey Middleton, who has just been confirmed as the show’s first-ever transgender contestant.
Shortly after CBS released the roster of Big Brother houseguests for season 17, TMZ reported that Audrey Middleton was born Adam Middleton, and grew up in a small Georgia town.
“We’re told when she transitioned several years ago, her family had a hard time accepting it,” TMZ reports. “But they’re now fully supportive and on board.”
According to TMZ, Middleton’s motivation for doing the show — along with the opportunity to win the million-dollar prize — is the chance to “use the program as a showcase… similar to what Caitlyn Jenner has been doing.”
“I think that I’m bringing in a very versatile perspective, of a character that hasn’t been brought before,” Middleton said.

A spokesperson for CBS confirms that Middleton is transgender, but adds that any further details will be revealed on the show.
“Audrey Middleton is a Big Brother super fan who applied online, like many other hopeful Houseguests, and was open about her transition in the application process,” the statement red. “It is customary for Big Brother Houseguests to share personal news inside the house, and Middleton plans to discuss her story with the houseguests in her own words during the premiere episode on Wednesday, June 24th.”
Big Brother‘s new season premieres Wednesday, June 24 at 8 p.m. on Global.
