Actor John Hurt battling pancreatic cancer

TORONTO — Actor John Hurt revealed Tuesday he is battling cancer.

The 75-year-old, who played Ollivander in the Harry Potter films, issued a statement in which he disclosed a diagnosis of early stage pancreatic cancer.

“I am undergoing treatment and am more than optimistic about a satisfactory outcome, as indeed is the medical team,” Hurt said.

Hurt earned an Oscar nomination for 1980’s The Elephant Man. His recent movies include Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Snowpiercer.

Hurt, born in England, was a made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2004 and was recently knighted for his service to drama.

Hurt said he released the statement about his cancer because he has “always been open about the way in which I conduct my life.”
