RCMP say Winnipeg man supports terror group, asks court to restrict his activities

WINNIPEG – RCMP say a Winnipeg man is a potential terrorist threat and are asking courts to impose conditions on his release, though no charges are being laid.

Officers applied in court Thursday for a peace bond against Aaron Daniel Driver, 23, who was arrested Wednesday in a raid on a home on Carlotta Crescent in Charleswood.

Driver, better known by his assumed name Harun Adbdurahman, made headlines earlier this year expressing support for the terrorist group ISIS, and recent terror attacks in Canada. There were reports the Canadian Security Intelligence Service was investigating him.

In documents filed in a Winnipeg court Friday, a Manitoba based member of the RCMP’s National Security Section says he has reason to fear Driver “will participate in or contribute to, directly or indirectly, the activity of a terrorist group for the purpose of enhancing the ability of any terrorist group to facilitate or carry out a terrorist activity, pursuant to S.810.01 of the Criminal Code.”

Section 810 of the Criminal Code allows courts to impose a peace bond on an individual even where no crime has been committed. In this case, Driver would be required only to “keep the peace and be of good behaviour” for 12 months.

Driver hasn’t been charged. He will be held in custody until appearing in Provincial Judges Court on June 9.
