Live stream: 2012 Oscar nominations

TORONTO – Oscar nomination time is here, at last.

There’s a long list of 2011 releases that Academy Awards watchers predict have legitimate shots at making the list of best-picture nominees.

 

Atop that list is the black-and-white, silent Valentine to Hollywood’s yesteryear, “The Artist,” which has been taking the lion’s share of top prizes throughout this major-award season-most recently at Saturday’s Producers Guild of America ceremony.

The 84th Academy Awards nominations will be announced Tuesday January 24 at 8:30 a.m. ET/5:30 a.m. PT. Global News will be streaming live the Oscars nominations-you can watch the announcement below.

This year, anywhere between five and 10 films will make the best-picture nomination cut. In most previous years, only five could make the grade. Recently, the Academy doubled that number. Here are our nomination predictions:

 

BEST PICTURE
• “The Artist”
• “Tinker Taylor Solider Spy”
• “Hugo”
• “The Help”
• “The Descendants”
• “Midnight in Paris”
• “War Horse”
• “Moneyball”

Last week, the Canadian film “Monsieur Lazhar” was named one of the nine films on the long list for Oscar consideration. Directed by Philippe Falardeau, Monsieur Lazhar tells the story of an Algerian immigrant who is hired as a replacement teacher at a Montreal school after the original teacher commits suicide.

The 84th Academy Award winners will be announced on February 26, 2012.
