Nike unveils wristband designed to measure motion from different activities

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Nike has unveiled a high-tech wristband designed to measure users’ activity across different sports.

The FuelBand displays measures of calories burned and steps taken that many weekend warriors may be familiar with through gadgets and apps already on the market. But this device also counts something called NikeFuel, billed as a way to compare different activities through one metric.

Running, dancing, skateboarding – they all earn these points.

The wristband has a suggested retail price of US$149.

Nike measured the intensity of various actions, and recorded the corresponding motions, to create formulas to determine how much NikeFuel should be awarded when, for instance, Kevin Durant shoots a basketball.

Pre-orders for the device sold out Thursday. It hits stores Feb. 22.
