Good Samaritan saves elderly couple from Surrey house fire

WATCH: There is a lot to be said about being in the right place at the right time – for one Surrey woman that today meant being able to help an elderly couple out of their burning home. Julia Foy reports.

VANCOUVER – Good Samaritan Yvonne Bernardy-Dearden is just happy she was in the right place at the right time Monday morning.

She was driving down 0 Avenue on her way to work at 5:45 a.m. when she noticed smoke billowing from a home between 170 and 171 Streets. “I see the side of the house is on fire so I pulled over and called 911,” said Bernardy-Dearden.

She then started pounding on the door, calling out for the homeowners to wake up.

After getting no response and trying to look around the back of the house, Bernardy-Dearden came back to the front door and noticed it was open. However, no one was around. “I walked into the hallway and yelled ‘you have to get out of your house, your house if burning down!'” she said.

After helping the elderly couple out of the house, the firefighters arrived on scene.

“The adrenaline was going like crazy,” said Bernardy-Dearden. “When I first saw the fire the thought ‘am I seeing this fire? Is this really happening?'”

Luckily, everyone was fine. “The neighbours were lovely,” she said. “They were helping out with shoes and coats and everything.”

“The homeowners were lovely, almost calm.”

The building suffered extensive damage and investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
