FREDERICTON – Three New Brunswick schools will not reopen their doors in September, while two others will amalgamate.

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development confirmed Tuesday that Minister Serge Rousselle has accepted three applications from District Education Councils to close Lorne Middle School, Pennfield Elementary School and Coles Island School.

Stanley High and Stanley Middle schools will amalgamate. Those two schools already operate out of the same building.

It’s now up to the school districts to redirect students and facilitate the changes.

New school for West Saint John

A $21.6 million kindergarten to Grade 5 school is pegged to open in West Saint John in 2018, the province announced Tuesday.

When completed, the school is expected to accommodate 470 students from three surrounding schools, including St. Patrick’s, which is currently closed due to structural deficiencies, Havelock and Seawood schools.
