MONTREAL — Just a week after it was born, one of the two baby caribou born at Montreal’s Ecomuseum died on Tuesday night.
“It’s with a very heavy heart that I must tell you that one of our baby caribou sadly passed away last night,” Émilie Sénécal, a spokesperson at the Ecomuseum, told Global News.
Since the birth of the two caribou babies the weekend before last, the health of the two calves has been carefully monitored by the animal care team.

According to Sénécal, on Tuesday, the team noticed that the health of the youngest one “suddenly dropped,” and the calf was placed in emergency care for 24 hours.
“But the tremendous efforts provided by our team weren’t sufficient to save him,” Sénécal said.
She noted that, just like humans, baby animals can sometimes be born with health problems that develop only a few days after birth.
As for the older baby caribou, it seems to be very healthy.
“He started to eat grass, which is very good news.”

None of animals at the Ecomuseum Zoo could survive in their natural environment, and most are there because they have injuries that would prevent them from surviving in the wild.
