There was a protest outside a movie theatre in Surrey tonight.
Hundreds of people gathered to try to stop Strawberry Hills Cinemas from showing the controversial film Nanak Shah Fakir.
The movie is based on the life of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. Like many religions, Sikhs say it is sacrilegious to show a depiction of their founder.
“Somebody’s playing his role in the movie, which is not allowed within the Sikh religion. It’s never happened before,” said one of the organizers of the event.
“It’s something where we expect them to make the right decision, and they haven’t made the right decision.”
The producer of the movie has already voluntarily withdrawn the film in India, and theatre chains in England have also cancelled showings after mass protests.
There were several police on scene as a precaution, but no protesters were asked to move.
