Drumheller Institution on lockdown for ‘exceptional search’

CALGARY –The medium security unit at southern Alberta’s Drumheller Institution was under lockdown as of 5:40 a.m. Friday so staff could conduct “an exceptional search.”

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) said in a release the search was ordered to “ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates.”

Visits were suspended until the search could be completed, and normal operations will resume when safe, though a timeline was not provided.

“A search would be to find any unauthorized items and could include drugs, weapons, tobacco, anything inmates are not allowed to have,” said CSC spokesperson Jeff Campbell in an email to Global News. “The lockdown is intended to keep everyone safe while the search is completed.”

The incident comes as the Edmonton Institution remained on lockdown for an “exceptional search” that started Wednesday around 5:30 p.m.
