EDMONTON — Operations have resumed as normal at the Edmonton Institution a week after the facility was put on lockdown.

The maximum security federal prison was put on lockdown Wednesday, April 1 so staff could do “an exceptional search.”

Correctional Service of Canada officials did not explicitly explain the reason for the search, but a news release sent out Friday stated:

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is committed to preventing the entry of contraband into its institutions. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions.”

The search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the facility, staff and inmates, the release said.

Visits were suspended during the lockdown. The Edmonton max is located at 21611 Meridian Street.
