Four gyms opening in Regina’s east end this spring

REGINA – The competition between local gyms to attract consumers is getting heated as four gyms are set to open this spring within two city blocks in the city’s east end.

“Did they know that each [were] coming? Probably not,” said Linely Schaefer, a broker with ICR Commercial Real Estate Regina.

Orangetheory Fitness, Gold’s Gym, GoodLife Fitness, and the YMCA are all opening branches on Quance Street in the city’s east end.

The area’s proximity to Ring Road and Victoria Avenue is going to be a big help, said Schaefer, because it will draw clients from the south and north, along with communities east of the city.

“The [YMCA] has its niche and who they cater to. Both GoodLife and Gold’s will cater to a different clientele,” he said.

GoodLife Fitness beat the three chains to the punch Tuesday night.

“We’re super excited to be here because this helps us fulfill our goal to help more Canadians get fit and stay fit,” said Mo Hagan, program innovation and fitness development vice president for the company.

The gym, located in the east side of Victoria Square Mall, features virtual group fitness, which entails participating in video-based workouts played through a projector in the facility.

“It’s like a new toy, you get excited,” said Hagan, adding that the technology is being used by the chain only in Saskatchewan for the time being.

Gold’s Gym prides itself on making each gym different from its others. Its new location will be its largest in western Canada.

“We want a member to be able to get a different experience depending on what club they go to,” said Matthew Sawa, a managing partner with Gold’s. “Competition only makes you stronger.”

A 2013 Statistics Canada report showed that 54.8 per cent of Regina residents are considered overweight or obese, higher than the national average of 52.3 per cent.

“It’s a sad statistic and it’s not getting better,” said Hagan.
