UPDATE: The BC Coroners Service has identified the victim Gilles Robert Joseph Thivierge, 61, of Malakwa.
MALAKWA – RCMP are hoping a video recording from a train engine will shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the death of a 62-year-old man over the weekend. He was one of three occupants of a vehicle that was hit by a train Saturday night in the community of Malakwa, northeast of Sicamous. Although all three of the vehicle’s occupants were able to get out of the car, the man was still killed.
“It would appear that he was struck by the train prior to the train striking the vehicle,” says Cpl. J.R. Lechky of Sicamous RCMP.

RCMP say they were called in just before 10:00 p.m. to deal with a report of a car stuck on the tracks with three people inside. Police say a westbound CP Rail train was unable to stop in time, hitting the vehicle.
The man died at the scene. The two other occupants were taken to hospital and then released that evening.
