Pearson’s volunteer team quietly helping thousands of people

WATCH: Meet one of Pearson Airport’s welcome volunteers, Walter Hryshko.

TORONTO — More than 140 Toronto Pearson Airport volunteers are at your service if you know where you need to go but are not too sure of how to get there.

The Welcome Team Volunteer Program was designed to make a trip to the airport as relaxing as possible for passengers.

Volunteers are on-hand between 4 a.m. and 1030 p.m. to help with any traveling concerns, whether it’s catching that tight connecting flight or simply looking for a place to grab a quick bite.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“One of the things we want to do is personalize the service that passengers have when they come into the airport,” said Suzanne Gayle, a Program Manager of the Welcome Team.

Walter Hryshko has been a volunteer team member since last summer and can’t think of any other place he would rather spend his spare time.

“I’ve always loved airports since I was a kid,” said Walter. “They’re all going somewhere, coming back from some place, and they’re all a little bit lost like a deer in headlights. This is a big place and I just enjoy helping them get where they need to go.”

Questions are always coming in and it keeps Walter on his toes.

“I’ve gotten queries such as, ‘where’s the nearest mailbox?’ We have to know that. We can’t tell a passenger who’s pressed for time, ‘I don’t know let me find that out for you.’ That has to be at the tip of our tongue.”

Since it started, Walter and the team have assisted over 400,000 passengers.
