CALGARY – Whether you’re looking for your first job or trying to find a new one, it pays to get some professional help.
Anna Thai is a University of Calgary Business Marketing graduate, but still looking for work in her field.
With more competition for jobs in this economy, she’s worried about her chances.
“I have to try that much harder compared to maybe other graduating years,” said Thai.
So she’s getting some professional help at About Staffing. The agency says it’s all about updating your resume and practicing interview skills to show potential employers how they can use your skills, says Chris Massie with About Staffing.
“You need to be thinking to yourself, ‘how am I going to market what I have to offer?'” he said. “And what value does that offer to a future potential employer?”
He says applicants need to develop relationships, get involved in industry associations and network on platforms like LinkedIn. But in-person meetings are important too: Job and career fairs are going to be in big demand this year.
Arlayna Alcock with Bow Valley College says with fewer companies hiring and more students applying, career service counseling is booked solid.
“We offer a service where we help them check their resumes, help them practice interviews, tell them how to act at a job fair, how talk to people at a job fair and collect information,” said Alcock.
Thai knows she’ll have to work hard to find a job, but says there are industries outside oil and gas still hiring.
She’s hoping a little professional advice will help her get the edge.
