Vancouver’s Vasek Pospisil downed Go Soeda in three sets at the University of British Columbia to lift Canada to a 3-2 win over Japan in their best-of-five Davis Cup tie.

Canada advances to the Davis Cup quarter-finals, which will be played against Belgium this July.

Pospisil, ranked 62nd in the world, dispatched the 86th-ranked Soeda 7-5, 6-3, 6-4, in one hour 49 minutes

Pospisil was playing in his third match in as many days after competing in both singles and doubles matches earlier in the weekend.

He needed to play the fifth and deciding match of the tie after World No. 6 Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., dropped a five-set decision to No. 4 Kei Nishikori earlier in the day.
