Montreal mail carriers under attack

MONTREAL – Mail carriers in the northeast of Montreal are on edge following a dozen armed attacks since the beginning of the year.

A union spokesman says two men carrying knives or scissors have been threatening the workers and stealing keys to mail boxes.

Alain Duguay, the local president of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, says the assailants then use the keys to steal credit cards, passports and other important documents.

Duguay says two of the attacks took place at community mail boxes, with the most recent incident occurring at the beginning of the week.

Nobody has been injured so far.

The union official is worried that the arrival of community mail boxes will make it a lot easier for people to attack letter carriers.
