TORONTO – The Union representing close to 7,000 non-tenured staff and teaching assistants at the University of Toronto announced early Friday morning they have averted a strike by reaching a tentative agreement.

In a statement, CUPE 3902 said its bargaining team voted unanimously to recommend the new collective agreement.

“All seven Bargaining Team members believe that this is an agreement we can be proud of, with many significant gains for our members,” the statement read.

Specifics about the terms were not released.

The strike deadline was midnight Thursday, but the talks were extended until 2:45 a.m. before an agreement was finally reached.

Members of CUPE 3902 have been seeking a new collective agreement since mid-2014 with wages, healthcare benefits and job security as the main sticking points.
