Top 5 dog breeds Canada vs. US

WATCH ABOVE:  Canadians and Americans can agree on a lot of things. But, we differ in our favourite dogs. Allison Vuchnich has the story.

The Canadian and American Kennel Clubs have released the most popular dogs for 2014.

The leader of the pack is the family-friendly Labrador retriever – again! For 20 years in Canada and 24 in the United States, this loyal and adaptable breed has topped the list.

“I’m thrilled to see the Lab at the top of the list once again. This versatile breed continues to be a big hit with families year after year and remains one of the most in-demand breeds for service, rescue and therapy work,” said Andrew Patton, CKC Manager of Communications.

The second most popular in both countries is the German shepherd, described as talented and versatile.

The third ranked is the golden retriever, known for its innate intelligence and gentle temperament.

But from there the list in Canada and the U.S. differ:

Canadian Kennel Club

  1. Labrador retriever
  2. German shepherd
  3. Golden retriever
  4. Poodle
  5. Shetland sheepdog

American Kennel Club

  1. Labrador retriever
  2. German shepherd
  3. Golden retriever
  4. Bulldog
  5. Beagle

The bulldog making its way into the top four in the United States marks the biggest change.

“The Lab truly is America’s dog,” said ACK Vice President Gina DiNardo, “but the lovable bulldog breeds are clamoring to dominate. Watch out for an upset next year.”

But overall North Americans are still in love with the Labrador retriever.
