Environment Canada issued the alert shortly after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday warning that temperatures could drop below – 30 C with the wind chill.
And the weather isn’t expected to get much warmer Thursday afternoon. The weather agency says temperatures are only expected to rise a few degrees above that low Thursday afternoon while winds becoming increasingly gusty.
There might be some relief during the weekend however as temperatures are forecast to reach a high of -1 C Saturday and -2 C Sunday.
Environment Canada cautioned that anyone not dressed warmly while outside is at a greater risk of developing frost bite and hypothermia. Health risks are greatest, the weather agency said, among people experiencing homelessness, people working outdoors and people living in homes with poor insulation.
