Watch the video above: NASA released a timelapse of the sun’s activity over the past five years.

TORONTO – NASA has released a video of the sun in action over the past five years.

The video marks the fifth anniversary of the launch of the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and captures one frame every hour starting from June 2010 to Feb. 8, 2015.

The sun is a ball of mostly hydrogen gas and some helium. It makes up more than 99 per cent of the mass of the entire solar system. Unlike Earth, different parts of the sun rotate at different rates.

There are currently several satellites studying our sun including Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), the  Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO), and the Japanese satellite Hinode.

On Wednesday, a joint mission between NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration called the Deep Space Climate Observatory  (DSCOVR) was launched to study the effects of space weather on Earth which includes the solar activity.
